INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks and the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs, announced Tuesday that they have signed forward Mathew Thompson to an ECHL contract for the 2018-19 season.
Thompson, 24, returns to Indianapolis for his rookie season after making his pro debut with the Fuel this spring. Joining the team on an amateur tryout contract on March 30, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound forward played his way to a spot on Indy's playoff roster, tallying two goals and four assists in seven regular season games. Thompson's strong first impression earned him a standard contract, before he chipped in one goal and one assist over four Kelly Cup Playoff appearances.
The 2017-18 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Player of the Year, Thompson is coming off a standout collegiate career at Adrian College (Div. III). Last season the native of Bolton, Ontario finished second in team scoring with 34 points (16g, 18a) in 30 games while helping the Bulldogs reach the NCAA quarterfinals. Serving as captain for the last two seasons, Thompson finished his Adrian tenure at over a point-per-game pace, logging 61 goals, 67 assists and a plus-69 rating in 105 total NCAA games.
Thompson joins forward Logan Nelson as the first two players under contract with the Fuel for the 2018-19 season. To view the full roster, click here.
