INDIANAPOLIS - In the second half of a home-and-home series, the Indy Fuel (11-13-0-0) faced the Toledo Walleye (14-9-2-0) at the Huntington Center for the first time this season. Indy saw Spencer Watson extend his 12-game point streak with two goals of his own but a four-goal third period gave Toledo a 6-2 win on Friday night.
The Walleye controlled the majority of the opening period, forcing Indy to kill off two penalties. After two man-advantages, the Walleye led in the shot department 10-4 but were shut down by Indy goaltender Gordon Defiel (32 SVS). After two power plays of their own, Indy was handed a hooking penalty and Toledo's Troy Loggins took advantage of the man-advantage, burying a rebound and sending the Walleye into the locker room up 1-0.
Throughout the first half of the second period, both teams traded chances but neither team were able to capitalize on their offensive zone time. The Walleye doubled their lead with eight minutes left in the period, taking advantage of an Indy turnover and beating Defiel with a wrist shot. Spencer Watson cut the Toledo lead in half, intercepting a pass in the slot and beating Walleye goaltender Billy Christopoulos (30 SVS).
Toledo quickly doubled their lead in the third period when a missed shot on an Indy power play led to an odd man rush for the Walleye. Brett Boeing took advantage of the odd man rush, beating Defiel through the five hole with a wrist shot. The Walleye immediately added to their lead, when TJ Hensick put a deflected wrist shot past Defiel.
The Walleye made it 5-1 when an Indy turnover came to Justin Buzzeo and he beat Defiel. Toledo added a sixth goal when Brenden Kotyk fired a slap shot from the blueline into traffic and it snuck by Indy's defense and into the back of the net. Spencer Watson doubled his goal total, firing a slap shot past Christopoulos, cutting the Toledo lead to 6-2 but it wouldn't be enough for the Fuel as they would fall to the Walleye for the first time this season on Friday night.
