INDIANAPOLIS – The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks and the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, announced Thursday that they have acquired defenseman Zach Malatesta from the Worcester Railers fulfilling the futures owed for the Nic Pierog trade in October. Additionally, the Fuel have traded Malatesta to the Maine Mariners in exchange for Brycen Martin.
Martin, 25, joins the Fuel after playing 17 games for the Mariners this season earning nine assists and eight penalty minutes. The 6-foot-2, 209-pound defenseman is in his sixth pro season and has played 213 ECHL games tallying 15 goals, 54 assists and 142 penalty minutes.
A 3rd-round draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres (74th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Martin has 21 AHL games under his belt with the Rochester Americans. Prior to turning pro, Martin played four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Swift Current Broncos, Saskatoon Blades and Everett Silvertips.
