INDIANAPOLIS - Playing their third game in three days, the Indy Fuel hosted the Iowa Heartlanders on Sunday afternoon. After coming back from a 1-0 deficit for the majority of the game, the Fuel gave up a late goal handing them their first loss of the new year.
Outshooting the Heartlanders 4-2 through the first 10 minutes of the first period, each team would struggle to put together any significant offense. Corbin Kaczperski and Thomas Sigouin would combine for 15 saves in the first period, sending the teams into the locker room tied 0-0.
Scoring the first goal of the game and of his season, Derek Whitmore beat a Fuel defenseman and tucked the puck past Sigouin to give the Heartlanders a 1-0 lead. Although outshooting the Heartlanders through the remainder of the period, Indy wouldn’t be able to get any pucks past Kaczperski.
Throughout the first half of the final period, the Fuel would have two strong scoring chances but Kaczperski would fend them off. Indy would finally tie the game when Craig Wyszomirski fed CJ Eick a cross-ice pass and he one-timed it past Kaczperski, tying the game with 7:40 remaining. Iowa would respond and eventually earn the win after Jake Smith fired a shot from the goal line and beat Sigouin to make the score 2-1.
