The Indy Fuel and racing go hand-in-hand. The Fuel name is derived from the rich history of auto racing in Indianapolis that has “fueled” the local economy for over a hundred years.
Over the years, the team has embraced racing’s important place in Indianapolis in a few different ways. In honor of the 106th Annual Indy 500 this weekend, we wanted to showcase a few of our favorite “racing” moments over the past eight seasons.
The Indy Fuel hosted the 2018 ECHL All-Star Classic. Scott Goodyear, one of Canada’s best-known international racers, was in attendance as a celebrity coach. The uniforms for all four divisions featured the colors of the Indy Fuel, with the unique sleeve pattern honoring Indianapolis’ auto racing background.
Cliff Watson, who played for Utah in 2018, participated in the 2018 ECHL All-Star Classic. He’d go on to join the Indy Fuel during the 2019-2020 season and become our Captain in 2020-21 and a co-captain in 2021-22. He had less hair then.
Ahead of the Fuel’s Racing Night on February 26, 2022, the team took a trip to Indianapolis Motor Speedway where they got to walk around the track, kiss the bricks and learn all about the world’s most famous speedway and its fascinating history.
Racing Night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum tied in all aspects of racing from the uniforms the team wore to actual cars around the lobby and outside for fans to look at.
The uniforms that night were designed to look like a racing suit. They were later auctioned off live after the game.
Fans had the opportunity to see cars by the entrance, stop at tables from organizations like Indy Car and Lucas Oil Products and more!
