ABOUT THE HOCKEY
INDIANAPOLIS- The Fuel open their season at Indiana Farmers Coliseum against the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday night. Last season, Indy had a 4-3 record against the Komets.LAST TIME OUT:The last time these two teams met, Fort Wayne took the final matchup of the season by a score of 5-2 on March 25, 2022. The final Fuel goal was scored by the dynamic trio of Lemos, Mandat and Texeira that are all returning this season.
DEFENSIVE DEPTH:After two preseason games where head coach Duncan Dalmao worked to secure his roster, it was clear that the Fuel’s defense had a significant impact during that set of games against Cincinnati. The Fuel’s defensive ability to turn the puck over and force a scoring opportunity was on full display last weekend.
Additionally, there were thirteen shots on goal registered by defensemen across the two game set. Defenseman Keoni Texeira even tallied a goal and led the team in points through both games. If Indy can continue to thrive on the blue line, it can only spell good things for the team.
WIDEMAN’S RETURN:Alex Wideman is making his return to Indy after four years since last being rostered on the Fuel. Wideman began his career with the Indiana Ice in 2009. With his return announcement, he also stated this would be his final professional season and he wanted to finish his career where he started it, in Indianapolis. Wideman was a 2016-17 ECHL All Star, and is tied with Spencer Watson for fifth place on the all-time Fuel assists list with 65. He is also fifth all-time in points, goals and points per season for the Fuel. Wideman has played 244 total ECHL games, scoring 204 points.
