INDIANAPOLIS – The Fuel announced on Thursday that they have traded future considerations to the Maine Mariners for defenseman Matt Cairns. Additionally, forward Kale Howarth and goaltender Mitchell Weeks have been assigned to the Fuel by Rockford.
Cairns, 25, joins the Fuel from Maine who owned his rights after playing 11 games for the Cincinnati Cyclones and five games for their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, this season.
The Mississauga, Ontario native played 110 games for the Cyclones from 2021 to 2023 while earning two AHL call-ups to the Rochester Americans and Milwaukee Admirals. He also helped the Cyclones to the Kelly Cup Playoffs two years in a row.
Prior to that, Cairns played 28 games at the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he tallied six assists, after playing at Cornell for three seasons.
The 6’2 defenseman is a two-time NCAA regular season champion and an OJHL champion.

Kale Howarth, 6’5, has been loaned to the Fuel after being sidelined with a concussion after one game with the Rockford IceHogs this season. Last year, the Canadian forward played 26 games with the Fuel where he scored eight goals. He also played 31 games with the IceHogs last year.

Additionally, goaltender Mitchell Weeks is returning to Indy from Rockford. Weeks has appeared in 12 games with Indy this season and has a 3-5-3 record.
