Fuel climb closer to playoff spot; defeat Quad City 4-2

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel full force playoff drive is very much alive as they claimed their third consecutive victory and their second in as many nights against division foe Quad City in a 4-2 triumph Friday night at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

Once again generating solid scoring balance, the Fuel struck with a pair of goals in each of the first two periods with four different sharpshooters finding the bullseye. Indy made connection early and often in the opening frame of the game as Alex Wideman fired the game's FG at 4:21 on an impeccable feed from defenseman Robin Press before Press, himself, cannonaded his 9th goal of the season and 6th on the power play at 8:16 while the Fuel were enjoying the 2-man advantage.

Taking the 2-0 lead into the middle stanza, the Fuel swelled their advantage to a “trifecta” when another defenseman, Jack Burton, bended home a sharp angle shot from the left wing boards. The Colby College first-year pro's goal was his third of the season and his first-ever GWG. His goal also chased starting goaltender C.J. Motte who was making his seventh straight start in the “Greenheads” goal.

After the visitors eroded their deficit to 3-1 on an Alex Globke SHG, Indy, undaunted and untrammeled bounced right back when Matt Iacopelli unleashed his second goal in as many games for the Fuel since his reassignment by parent club Chicago through the AHL Rockford affiliation. Iacopelli's strike capped a Fuel 3-on-1 fast jailbreak.

In the third period, with the Fuel on top, 4-1, the Mallards produced their first PPG of the series when Triston King uncorked his third goal of the series at 8:46.

Quad City outshot the Fuel, 34-27 as “ET” Marcoux earned the game's #3 Star with a superb 32-saves performance. Both teams' power plays were 1-4 with the Fuel now 5-12 in the series and the Mallards 1-8. Press (1-1-2) was the game's #1 Star while Wideman also (1-1-2) was named the #2 Star.

With their latest win, the Fuel have closed to within 3-points of 4th place Cincinnati, though, the Cyclones do have 2-games in hand on the Indy club. Moreover, Indy has climbed within 4-points of third place Kalamazoo with the Fuel and the Wings having played the same number of games at 53.

The Fuel have won 3-in a row for the fourth time this season, their longest win streak of the current campaign as they have captured the first 3-games of this 5-games' homestand. They are 7(5-2-0) through the first 7-games of this ambitious agenda consisting of 8-games in 11-days. Indy is 6(5-1-0) in its last 6-starts; last 10(7-3-0); last 26(17-9-0). Their victory Friday night was their 4th consecutively over Quad City and their 6th in succession at home against the Mallards, dating back to last season.

The same two teams will cap the 3-games' set Saturday night at 7:35 pm at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on “The Walking Dead Night.” It will be the 11th and final meeting of the season for the Fuel and “Quack Attack,” with the Fuel having clinched the series at 10(6-2-2).
