After two seasons playing in Indianapolis for the Indiana Ice, Mattson went on to play four years at the University of North Dakota appearing in 153 games donning the Fighting Hawks sweater. Once he graduated, Mattson signed a 2 year AHL contract with the Rockford IceHogs where he would be assigned to play for the Indy Fuel.
In his two seasons here in Indianapolis, Mattson would appear in 111 games tallying up 38 PIM, 2 goals, and 29 assists. Mattson appeared in 19 games for the Rockford IceHogs netting 1 goal and 6 assists with only 2 PIM.
