INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL's Rockford IceHogs announced Wednesday that they have signed goaltender Dan Bakala to a standard player contract.
Bakala, 32, signs with the Fuel after spending the first half of the 2019-20 season playing for Mora IK in the Swedish Allsvenskan. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound goaltender appeared in five games with Mora IK, earning a 4.26 goals-against average and a .854 save percentage. Prior to his time with Mora Ik, Bakala spent the 2018-19 season with Villacher SV in the EBEL, playing in 49 games and registering a 3.06 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Bakala has spent the last five seasons playing in the EBEL (Austria), DEL (Germany), SHL and Allsvenskan (Sweden). Appearing in 20 games with the Frolunda Indians (SHL) during the 2016-17 season, Bakala helped the Indians to the Champions Hockey League Championship.
Additional to the Bakala signing, the Fuel announced that they have released goaltender Gordon Defiel. Indy begins three games in three days on Thursday at home against the Cincinnati Cyclones and Fort Wayne Komets then visit the Toledo Walleye on Saturday night.
