In the first half of a home and home series between the Indy Fuel and Wheeling Nailers, the Fuel would score three goals in the first period in what would be a nine-goal game. Giving up two goals in the third period, the Fuel would eventually hang on to defeat the Nailers 5-4.
NIC’S NOTCHES
In Saturday’s game between Indy and Wheeling, Nic Pierog picked up two goals, putting him tied for first place in the league in goals. Scoring two goals back to back in the first period, Pierog now has two games this season where he has earned multiple goals. The third-year pro sits one point ahead of Peter Krieger who has registered five goals and six assists on the season.
SPECIAL TEAMS EXPERTS
Scoring on the power play twice on Saturday night, the Indy Fuel sits in fourth place in the ECHL in power-play percentage (18.6%). The Fuel special teams had a busy time in Saturday’s game having to kill off eight different man advantages, as well as a short 5-on-3. Entering Sunday afternoon, Indy has killed off 86.7% of their penalties, putting them in fifth place in the league in penalty killing.
