INDIANAPOLIS - Opening the 2021-22 campaign at home, the Indy Fuel hosted the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. A late third-period goal by Mason Mitchell handed the Cyclones the win in game one of the 2021-22 season.
After trading chances throughout the opening period, neither team were able to put the puck in the net. Outshooting the Cyclones 15-7, the Fuel couldn’t put the puck past Cincinnati goaltender Michael Houser.
Handing the Fuel the lead less than a minute into the second period, Spencer Watson sprung Cedric Lacroix on a breakaway and he tucked the puck through the legs of Houser. The Cyclones responded almost immediately when Mason Mitchell tapped in a cross-ice pass from Matt McLeod. It would take until the final minutes of the middle period for anybody to take a lead when Graham Knott rushed down the side and put a wrist shot over the shoulder of Fuel goaltender Cale Morris.
Starting the third period on the power play, Brent Gates would get loose on the sideboards and fire a wrist shot that would sneak through the five-hole of Houser, tying the game 2-2. Taking advantage of a power play midway through the third, Mason Mitchell would pick up his second goal of the game, deflecting a shot by Morris to take a 3-2 lead.
