INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel announced today that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Tanner Butler in the team’s eleventh player signing of the 2022-23 season.
Butler, 29, will be rejoining the Fuel after playing six games in Indy last season on loan from the Evansville Thunderbolts of the SPHL. In six games with the Fuel, Butler had one goal, and one assist.
Prior to joining the Fuel, last season Butler played 49 games for the Thunderbirds, tallying 20 points and posting a +/- of +8. He led the team in scoring among all defensemen. He also played 34 games for the Thunderbirds in the 2019-20 season where he had six points before COVID impacted the SPHL season.
During the 2020-21 season, Butler took his talents to Sweden, fulfilling a longtime goal of his to play hockey in Europe where he played 12 games before another COVID-impacted season.
Before his professional career, Butler played five seasons at Red Deer College in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) while getting a degree in Kinesiology. He was captain of the Red Deer Kings for his final two seasons, and currently holds the all-time record for games played for the Kings. He is also third all-time in points for the team, first among defensemen. He was awarded the ACAC’s Male Hockey Player of the Year Award in 2019.
The Souris, Manitoba native played junior hockey in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) for four years for the Dauphin Kings, where he totaled 133 points and was the defenseman of the year for the 2012-13 season.
