CORALVILLE- The Indy Fuel won the final series against the Iowa Heartlanders on Sunday. Despite only having the lead for around three-minutes, the Fuel walked away with two important points after a six round shootout.
1ST PERIOD
Iowa got off to a hot start, with Isaac Johnson drawing first for the Heartlanders. An unassisted goal at 3:31 in the first.
Chris Cameron draws the first penalty of the game at 10:16 for boarding. Iowa was not able to capitalize.
Iowa outshot Indy 14-9 in the first period and led 1-0.
2ND PERIOD
Indy had an early 2nd period power play as Iowa’s Grant Ahcan sat for tripping just nine seconds into the period. The Fuel were unsuccessful in the man-advantage.
Seconds after the power play expired, Iowa’s Elliot Desnoyers nets his 8th goal of the season.
Jadon Joseph sat for holding, just five seconds after the Heartlanders goal. The Fuel were able to clear it off.
Desnoyers sent the Fuel back to the power play after a roughing penalty.
Seconds after the man advantage expired. Matt Petgrave cut the deficit in half with a goal assisted by Tyler Pacquette and Jadon Joseph. With this goal, Matt Petgrave passed Robin Press to become the Fuel franchise single season defenseman points leader with 45.
Cameron Butler gave the Fuel their third power play opportunity of the game. Cody Laskosky capitalized and tied up the game. The power play goal was assisted by Trevor Zins and Jesse Tucker.
However, Nick Grima sends the Fuel to the penalty kill after a tripping call. The Iowa power play was unsuccessful.
Iowa narrowly outshot Indy 23-22, but the score was tied at 2-2.
3RD PERIOD
Grant Ahcan activated the first special teams of the third period less than four minutes into the period.
Just seconds after the power play expired, Alex DiPaolo gave the Fuel their first lead of the game. DiPaolo’s 7th goal of the season was assisted by Christian Berger and Chris Cameron.
It was not long till Iowa responded, Keltie Jeri-Leon nets goals in back to back games against the Fuel. John Lundy and T.J. Schweighardt earned the assists.
Isaac Johnson sent the Fuel to their 5th power play of the game after being called for tripping. Indy was unable to take the lead from the power play.
Tyler Weiss sat for hooking with 4:52 left in the third period. Indy kept the game tied at three.
Indy outshot Iowa by the end of regulation 34-32.
OVERTIME
Indy and Iowa had good chances in overtime however, both goalies held strong.
SHOOTOUT
The shootout lasted six rounds, with Owen Flores stopping five out of the six shooters. Marcus Joughin and Jadon Joseph netted past Riley Mercer for the win.
