FISHERS- The Fuel have announced on Thursday that they have re-signed defenseman Matt Petgrave to a standard player contract for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
Petgrave, 34, returns to the Fuel after the 2025-26 season, where he was one of two players to play in all 72 regular-season games as well as five playoff games. He tallied 48 points in the regular season and recorded a goal and an assist in the playoff series against Fort Wayne.
Those 48 points set a franchise record for most points by a defenseman in a single season for the Fuel. The 12 goals he scored put him in second place in goals in franchise history among defensemen, one goal shy of the single-season record.
Prior to joining the Fuel last year, he played two seasons for the Sheffield Steelers of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) from 2022 to 2023. In 61 games, he tallied 51 points for the Steelers.
The Toronto native spent five seasons playing in both the ECHL and AHL before his time in the EIHL. Most recently, he played for the Florida Everblades in 2021. During the 2017-18 season, he was named an ECHL All-Star with the Brampton Beast after scoring 40 points in 50 games.
The 6’1, 200-pound defenseman is an OHL Champion, CIS University Cup Champion, and USports University Cup Champion as well.
